2009.06. - Burg Eltz

Countryside along the Moselle (Mosel) have been on our "Trips to Do" list for a long time.
This weekend we finally made it.

We decided to visit one of the best preserved castels of Germany, Burg Eltz.

And it took our breath away. Not just because there are steep trails leading up and down around it.

The Castle has been in the hands of the same family for more than 800 years. They always managed to choose sides in times of battle in a way which guaranteed no destruction of the fortress whatsoever.
It sits in the middle of a valley cut by the river Eltz flowing to the Mosel and originates appr. from the 9th century.

We had a great tour led by a Dutch guide through the rooms and halls of the castle. He entertained us with endless stories about the history and secrets of the architecture, furniture, paintings and ornaments of the castle, also revealing lingiustic connections between Latin and modern languages. It was pretty impressive.
Then we saw the Treasure Vault which has gold and silver items on display.

The kids were happy to get their feet wet in the water of the Eltz. They were not the only visitors to do so.

Daniel had to be careful not to make his freshly acquired wound wet.

We just parked the car, got out and ready to hit the trail when he hit something else. He was running around in crocs, slipped on loose pebbles and smashed his left knee into the rocks on the road.

After 5 minutes of painful screaming and some bleeding and cleaning up of the bruise, he impressed us all by not complaining at all for the rest of the day.

On the way home we drove along the Mosel and stopped for a meal. Skipped desert though and rather had cherries at home. One of Dana's favourite fruit - he can play with it, eat it and then still play with it by shooting the cherry pits all around.
